Grouting A Glass Mosaic
Did you know that making beautiful glass mosaic tiles into art is easy? Have ever tried your hand at building a mosaic, only to watch the grout you painstakingly applied shrink before your eyes as it hardens? You can see that the grout lines are not flush with the glass tile pieces and tiny pinholes have mysteriously appeared. This is understandably frustrating. Now what should you do? Let's take a look at how to fix and ultimately prevent problems from ruining your project.
Your grout may have been too runny if it shrunk after setting and hardening. You will experience a lot less shrinkage around your glass tiles when you mix your grout to a thick and pasty consistency. Even if your grout does shrink, it is easily fixable. It only requires that you re-grout your glass mosaic. And since the grout is much easier to apply the second time around, you should be able to achieve the near perfect results you are looking for.
If you don't like the idea of having to re-grout between the art mosaic tiles again, then here is a little trick you can use at the end of the process. After you have completed the last wiping cycle, and only when the grout has set for around forty-five minutes, go back and carefully inspect your mosaic design for tiny pinholes, any missed areas, depressed or shrunken grout lines and other imperfections. Just use the leftover grout, if it is still workable. If it is not workable, then mix another small batch; around two tablespoons of the grout powder are usually enough. Add a little water at a time so you don't end up with watery mixture.
The imperfections are fixed quite easily. Remember that you don't have to accept any imperfections at all. Just go back and fill in the problems. Do not use your bare hands when working with grout. After awhile, the skin on your fingers will wear away and start to bleed. Always wear rubber gloves to protect your skin.
Don't be discouraged if your artwork has a few problems. They can be remedied. All you need to do is take your time and pay attention to details to achieve the kind of quality results you are proud to display in your home or in the garden, as glass garden mosaics can also look stunning in a natural environment. Next time you grout a glass mosaic, try these tips. You will be pleased with the results you get, with no more grout line depressions, pinholes or imperfections.
