Stained Glass Mosaic
An art form that is usually not thought about too often but is a very versatile decorative and artistic application is the mosaic. Mosaics are made up of stone or glass tiles or broken pieces of pottery or glass that are arranged together to form a distinctive mosaic design. Grout is applied to hold the individual pieces to the base, as in a stained glass mosaic, and then a band of metal is soldered around the entire outside edge to hold it all together. Mosaics are used not only in practical applications, like bathroom floors and kitchen back splashes, they are also considered to be a very unique piece of art work.
The first step when making a mosaic is to decide on a pattern for your project and then gather your mosaic supplies. Stained glass mosaics are made with small glass tiles to create an intricate pattern. Your supplies should include a mosaic glass cutter for any shaping and cutting you might need to do. Although you can cut the stained glass tiles yourself, with the availability of small pre-cut pieces you no longer need to do so, which can save quite a bit of time.
For backing materials, wood and plexiglass are fine for indoor projects, but if you are making pieces that will be outdoors, such as garden mosaics, then a concrete backer board is best. It does not decay from exposure to the elements, like wood will do. Next, draw your mosaic pattern on the backing material and then arrange each stained glass tile onto your pattern. Then glue the glass onto the backing, one piece at a time.
Be sure to use mosaic glass glue for your indoor projects. Leave around 1/8 inch between each tile and allow the glue to dry for at least twenty four hours before you grout your project. Once the grout dries, place what is known as a zinc frame around the outer edge. A zinc frame is a bar that holds the pieces of tile and glass together. Now it is time to solder the frame together at the seams.
Be sure to add your own flair once you are comfortable with the basic stained glass mosaic steps. You will begin to add your own special touches to enhance the unique design. You can combine other types of tiles and stones with your stained glass as well. Make the zinc frame a part of your design; not just merely a way to finish the edges. There are no rules. Standard mosaics are made with small materials, but you can make them any way you wish.
The next time you break a glass or a dish to save the pieces for your next mosaic project. Some of the most beautiful stained glass mosaic pieces don't have any pattern at all. They are simply a kaleidoscope of textures and colors. Always be creative and just have fun. You just might amaze yourself.
